Antique Shipping Solutions

Please note our store will be closed 10/6 and 10/7 due to Hurricane Matthew.

It’s that special time of the year when folks return to Vero Beach to enjoy their seasonal home.  Aside from great sights, food and excursions; Vero also provides some amazing antique shopping. For that perfect piece that needs to go elsewhere, Pak Mail Beachside offers antique shipping; how convenient!

But how do you know if what you find is of real value? Here are some tips to help you in your shopping endevours:

1. How was the piece made?

Be sure to look closely and look for details such as dovetails when it comes to drawers or other markings that prove it was done by hand prior to the 20th century. Also, look closely at its hardware.  Older, authentic antiques will use threaded posts and have a nut securing the fixture to the furniture. If all you see is the top of a slotted or flat head screw then it is an indication that the hardware is newer and that perhaps the piece isn’t as old as you thought.

Antique sewing machines weigh a lot and are very delicate at the same time; we got it to Oregon with no damages or issues. Shipping success!

2. Look for a signature, a label, or a stamp.

Backs and undersides of drawers, bottoms and doors tell a great deal about the age and authenticity of a piece.  Pieces as far back as the 17th and 18th centuries tend to not have labels but beyond those years it was a common practice whether it is a name of the craftsmen, a company stamp or model number.

3. Check for damage and know the difference between repair vs. replacement

Cracks in the wood, especially in pieces several centuries old, is common and doesn’t necessarily detract from the value.  Where a piece is most likely to be damaged depends a lot on what part of the furniture is subject to the most wear.  Chairs often wear at the back legs or in the center supports first; whereas, a chest of drawers often incur the most damage at its feet from being pushed about.

Repairs, important to note, are when original pieces have been fixed  and put back onto a piece of furniture. A replacement is when the once missing part has been repaired/replaced with an entirely new piece.

7. Online auctions are okay!

If there aren’t good stores around your area, established auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s offer online complements to their scheduled auctions.  Though we all have a tendency to want to touch and look at a piece up close prior to buying; sometimes that isn’t an option. and if you trust the vendor it can prove to have a big payoff.

8. Buy what you love.

There’s a distinct difference between investment pieces and must haves.  If you fall in love with something because it is a perfect fit, then be honest with yourself about what it is worth and how much you are willing to pay.

Better still, know you can count of the professional at Pak Mail Beachside to help get it to where it needs to go whether it’s a local one man delivery from point A to point B in town or a specialty shipping job that needs to go clear across the globe. Find that special piece and cherish it. We will help get it to where it needs to go.
